Dignities
The sign a planet rules, where it is most at home.
Each of the seven traditional planets rules one or two signs. The Sun rules Leo and the Moon Cancer; Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, Venus Taurus and Libra, Mars Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius.
A planet in its domicile has the resources to act according to its nature. The ruler of a sign is also the planet that answers for anything placed in that sign.
New · Night
The site now has a night edition. Deep forest green takes the place of black, the woodcuts are re-inked in pale ink, and the red is tuned to glow without shouting.
Pictures printed in red ink, like the engravings and the portrait, are re-inked in the night green too, so the whole page speaks one colour after dark.

New · Edit this page
Every outlined word or picture can be changed right here. Tap the words and type. Headings stay one line; paragraphs take Enter for a new one. Straight quotes turn into proper curly ones by themselves.
Tap any outlined picture to choose a new one from your phone or Mac. It is shrunk to a sensible size first, then you can add a few words describing it for people who can’t see it.
Each change is kept as a draft the moment you make it. Only you can see drafts, on any device you are signed in on. Changes lists them all, from every page, with Undo beside each.
See as visitor hides the editing marks and shows the page as everyone will see it, with your waiting changes in place.
Send live puts every waiting change on the site in one go, so it rebuilds once (and spends one build, not ten). It is live in about two minutes and lands in /admin’s history too.
